Niall plays a gig, May 2005
-
Paul Golder says:
"I've spoken to Warren, who is the band's former tour manager (former guitarist with Eddie and the
Hot Rods) and a friend of Niall's. Apparently Niall has said yes (he's living in London
at the moment) but the interview hasn't happened yet. He confirmed that the band did play
in the Ship in Leigh on Sea in February - "the band" being Niall, Warren, someone
from Jamiroquai and someone else. They did use the Sultans of Ping name and the set consisted
wholly of Sultans songs."
Sultans Reforming?, April 2005
-
News has come from a few people (and this forum) that the sultans are reforming at the end of the year
and will be playing a gig in Cork around xmas.
Alan's new band, Feb 2003
-
Alan has a new band based in London called Sister
Sister formed in London in early 2003 and are a female fronted 5 piece rock
n roll band consisting of ex members of the Sultans of Ping and The Young
Offenders as well as current members of Simple Kid's backing band. Sister
have been compared by the music press to bands such as Mazy Star and the
Velvet Underground. However, lyrically they have more in common with country
music than with conventional rock. Negotiations are in progress with Banana
Records to release Sisters first single in spring with an album to follow.
"David Lynch's wet dream...a truly magical and intensely cool band....top
tip for 2004" - TIMEOUT
Alans brother, Ciaran (formerly of the Young Offenders) is now known as
SIMPLE KID and doing very well for himself. Great reviews all over the
place for his debut album SK1, sold out the Half Moon Theatre in cork last
sunday and the lobby in cork last november. Supposed to have signed a u.s.
deal with Vector records and is on 2m in the u.k.
Thanks to Jim Morrish for this info

Sultans Alive and Well, June 2002
-
Don't know if you know, but the Sultans are still playing in Sweden and
Japan. Morty runs two club nights over here in Stockholm, Going Underground
and Step On, and when I spoke to him last, he said he had just come back
from a few gigs but didn't do too much because of his wife and new kid.
(Mind you , I was abit drunk, so I may have got things muddled up.)

What Niall is doing now, Apr 2002
-
Sultans lead man Niall o'flaherty is still
involved with music, and more importantly a Japanese girl punk band called
Mika Bomb. On their album he is credited with co-writing all of their songs,
as well as producing the whole album and helping play various intruments.
One song is also credited as being co-written by him Sultans guitar player
Sammy Steiger. He's not actually in the band but seems like he's the brains
behind most of their stuff cos they sound a lot like the Ramones/Shonen
Knife and they are bloody brilliant! Get their stuff off audiogalaxy or buy
the album, you won't be disappointed, you can find out more about them at
www.mikabomb.com or www.manics45.freeserve.co.uk.

Latest News, Dec 1997
- Sultans play Sir Henry's, Cork on December 19th 1997. But is it
the last ever gig?
Sep 1997
- PHARMACY have signed to Red Ant in a worldwide deal, they enter
the studio in
August. Morty tells me the Sultans will probably be breaking up around
October and playing a final gig in their hometown of Cork around
then.

May 1997
- When I saw Niall in Camden he said that they probably wouldn't
tour any more as it costs too much. He announced at Islington that it was their
last gig. I don't know if they are splitting up, it's a possibility I
guess. Niall was writing for the fourth album though, and they played 2
new songs. I reckon we can expect at least one more album out of the
Sultans, back in December Niall said that they had some American investor
interested in them and he was pretty hopeful about getting one done.

Feb 1997
- Morty is now also druming with PHARMACY.

Jan 1997
- The sultans have been dropped by their record company, but have
had interest from one in the states. They are working on a fourth album,
hopefully this company will release it. In the meantime, Alan is teaching
bass to the guy from menswe@r.

New Album
Album cover trouble
- Sultans, Formerly Sultans Of Ping FC, have just got
into trouble over sleeve artwork - they had to repackage their
forthcoming album after both HMV and Virgin refused to stock it on the
shopfloor due to the cover's "offensive" design.
The offending artwork featured explicit images of bondage and S&M and is
currently being reworked after the band's paymaster, Arista, refused to
back them. See what all the fuss is about here
The Record, titled "A Good Year For Trouble", is due out on
Monday 24th June 1996. Sultans play Paris Zenith on July 4th along with
the Sex Pistols, then play London LA2 on July 12th before embarking on a
tour of Europe and the USA.

No more PING!
- Sultans have now changed their name to just
'The Sultans' for the 3rd album. Just before the 2nd album they
dropped the F.C,
does this mean that for the fourth they will just be called 'The'?
New guitarist
- Sultans have added a new guitarist to the lineup called SAMMY
STEIGER, from the band The Golden Horde.
